Final Show Opener



made this by hand.. stop motion with these paper cut out puppets with hinges at the joints. the type was the only digital aspect to the video. it's a review show opener about soccer. preferably listen to this with headphones on or good speakers (with bass) because there are tones so low you can't hear it with regular computer speakers.

after viewing gentry's revised postcard, the clear message to me was his implication with hoard of people with cameras to make a hint towards paparazzi. that name alone has mostly negative connotations within our western society. this this social/cultural impact was said to be first from Italian dialect, used from Federico Fellini. he describes it to be a particularly annoying noise, that of a buzzing mosquito. we are so caught up in the lives of famous actors/actresses and musicians, we would ignore our own lives to find out what's happening in theirs. major magazines and other businesses are willing to go as far as pay 150,000 dollars for a single image of ben and lopez. if someone were to turn in two photographs, they could easily buy a house and be set. some paparazzi justify this behavior by saying it's a 'two way street' which they say gives the famous the attention they need. some of the major media corporations would hire the paparazzi to photograph certain stars if they are in an upcoming movie and want to create a certain buzz for publicity's sake. but how far are people willing to go to get the 'best shot'? a lot of ethical and legal concerns arise. a qualification for a 'good photo' is not quality, as long as the star is recognizable . paparazzi may even intentionally provoke stars for a better photo. an example of an ethical concern i have are the images captured of princess di's crash. images are seen of the crash even before the help has arrived, or perhaps even requested. is it morally right to capture a photograph instead of helping another human life?
i think the west and japan are similar in that in our society, we don't really say much about ourselves personally. it is improper to discuss personal aspects to each other, even if there was a married couple for many years, would be hard to talk about 'fantasies' or things of that nature. this is why one of the most prized possessions in japan is to read someones journal. to get a glimpse of how a person really is, they consider journals very sacred. a lot of the contemporary novels written by japanese are shi su se tsu (i novel) written from the first person point of view. we are in a way the same in our culture because of the popularity of shoes like 'real world' when cameras fallow a cast for months. a lot of people love looking at other peoples lives rather than focusing on our own.

show opener data

I chose to create a show opener for a football program. considering my goal is to go into motion design, there would be nothing better for me to create a 30 second introduction for a tv cable show. There are football games that happen every week, so the idea of there being a 'football show' and or even channel, is very plausible. The purpose of a show opener is to well.. open a show. without these quick handy devices, it would be hard to know when one show stopped and another started. It should inform the viewer what sort of content will appear on the upcoming show by utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. Not to be confused with opening credits, the opening sequence should include not just text, but still and moving image. Luckily for me, there already is a soccer channel called Fox Sports World. The network always plays games throughout the week, and usually sums up the events in a news show with highlights. Usually the informational portion would appear towards the evening when people are home from work, because we all know we cant sit around and watch football all day at our jobs. During the day they show previous games for those who missed them. If the sequence is good enough, it won't need a presenter at the beginning, although there may be stills and text that reinforce the main characters or cast. The audience of course would be football lovers from all over. They would be able to sit back, kick their feet up, drink a nice cold beer and watch soccer. I in no way, shape, or form think there should be a soap opera about football starts, so my show would defiantly not be this. I was thinking something more along the lines of a highlight show or a news show that talked about the recent events pertaining to the football world. The graphics i've seen for some of these shows include people kicking balls, heading balls, and scoring with balls. When i think of soccer, i think action, and that's what ill be trying to create. I will be showing you some interesting title scenes, not necessarily to do with soccer, but that utilize image, sound, type, music, illustration, and video. as you can probably tell, i am a sucker for close textures and colors.

first i found a Slovenian show called brat bratu that has some fun ways that incorporate cut out animated cardboard

a show called six feet under.

a beautiful grease peace about the moon landing. the textures as small as this can stand for something much larger, like infinite outer space.

here is a personal favorite, dexter. It's a show about a blood splatter expert that works for crime scenes that's actually a serial killer.

Project 3: Sound

For my original concepts I wanted to create pages with links that the user could click on for navigation to a link. This allowed for e to incorporate common soccer elements (shoes, balls, the pitch) for a nice aesthetic feel. After creating these designs, I realized it was very strict and one sided for the user by directing them a certain way through the links.


after these initial concepts, i created these test files to see how the ideas would actually work when put to play.


after doing all this work, i realized the way i was allowing my user was very one sided, me. this must not be very interesting for someone to participate. for my final final concept, i wanted the interface to be as playful as their minds let them. because i placed everything on one frame, it allowed the user to have the optimum number of options available for their picking. this also allows for the user to create their own connections between moving and still images, sound fx, and music. the only thing i did not let you move around the page was the storyboard on the right side. i applied a sound fx to each image, but i thought it might be too hectic if the sound frames were movable. that is the one structured element i wanted the usuer not able to change.

concept book for Russel Wright American industrial designer during the 20th century. He believed good design should be affordable to everyone and brought modern design into thousands of households. I guess you could say he was the first 'martha stewart'.

soccer sounds

I found some interesting videos that incorporate the aesthetic qualities and sounds to soccer. It's frightening how similar this is to playing on the pitch. Based on the players around the first person and the colors of his teammates jerseys, it suggests who the first person player is (is in fact a professional player for Arsenal whose home country is the Netherlands). If you can tell me who this is, i'll draw you a personalized illustration of your choice!
Also a video that uses sounds for a musical advertisement. (although i'm not exactly sure why the break dancers are there).

Here is a concept for a book I created for typography. Using the poems of gertrude stein, I created layouts based on the ideas of fragmentation, cubism, collage, layering, and simultaneity. I played with repetition of sound and aligning all of the same words on a vertical axis. There are three different poem sections (objects, food, rooms), so I created three styles of type, each getting more structured as the book goes on. This not only allows me to split up the sections, but keeps the reader interested enough to keep going through the book. If i had all the spreads in the same manor, it would become boring and mundaine.

visual langage : final posters and statement

I wanted to create posters that were visually engaging not only to my demographic, but to anyone on the streets. Applying a hand made aesthetic is something rich and deep in mexican culture, so it was a must. by sampling from aztec drawings and carvings, i wanted to speak to the importance of mexican tradition. the fist poster is a parody because the headdress has icons that demonstrate a few concerns of my demographic. i chose to show education, health care, and the issues of war. I also added the two major parties into the collage. on my second poster, i used the hyperbole trope. i wanted to make this quite clear how quickley the say in immigration could be with their vote (the most populous demographic with the lowest voter turnout). i used physical maps so there was no mistake to what land mass i was referring to. i didn't want the rendering style or abstraction of my hand to change the true shape of their homeland. formally, the water is a texture i created and then cut into a mexican pattern. working with semiotics and using rhetorical devices helped me experiment formally and conceptually for the final outcome.

over the course of our discussions, i received opinions on the way some of the icons looked on my aztec poster. it seemed to be a big jump from one idea to the other, so refinement of the icons themselves was mandatory. they understood the appropriate tropes and the impact they had. the suggestion of modernizing some of the icons as well was mentioned, but i chose to stick with traditional symbols for meaning. on the immigration poster, they mentioned lighting issues. i had to go back and change the angle of where the light sorce was dirriving from, to make it more realistic. overall i got some really insightful advice from my peers.
